Is Twitter Pointless?

Twitter

Pingdom are reporting that Twitter now has 2 billion tweets…per month.

Tweets per month graph

In May alone Twitter saw:

  • 64 million tweets per day.
  • 2.7 million tweets per hour.
  • 44,481 tweets per minute.
  • 741 tweets per second

Yet I still talk to people who maintain that Twitter is pointless, many of whom are business owners. Are they right?

There is indeed a lot of rubbish being tweeted out there; not everyone wants to know what you had in your sandwich today or what your cat threw up on the kitchen floor this morning. They certainly don’t want to know when you’re going to the bathroom.

When used correctly however, Twitter has several benefits, including:

  • Networking with others: Twitter lets you connect globally with people in your market/industry, from peers to clients to potential clients. You do know how vital networking is to your making money right?
  • Grow your brand: Aside from networking, another key component to your success is branding. Whether its a personal brand or a business one, Twitter is another means of getting “out there” and getting known for who you are and what you do.

There are other benefits as well such as; staying current with breaking news (as in: the moment it breaks), researching a topic, and driving traffic to your blog/website.
